Types of luggage/cases

Luggage is not just about storing your clothes. Today, people want bags for outdoor sports and recreation as well. Bags that provide water protection and insulation are a necessity. Outer pockets allow easy access frequently used items such as water bottles.

Business / Computer Cases
Business cases come in a variety of types. Many are computer-compatible. They include compartments and pockets for business papers as well as business accessories.

Carry-Ons
Carry-ons are small suitcases that can be stored underneath the seat on a plane. They vary in size, but generally do not exceed 22". As a rule of thumb, these cases should not exceed 45 linear inches. Most contain outside pockets, multiple compartments, and a handle or shoulder strap.

Garment Bags and Carriers
The garment bag allows you to pack your clothes on hangers. Garment bags can accommodate two to four garments, while a garment carrier can hold ten or more garments. Garment bags range in length from 40" for men's suits, to 54" for women's dresses, and many can expand to 60" for evening clothes.

Kids Luggage
Whether on an overnight trip to Grandma and Grandpa’s or a week long vacation with the family, your children can travel with style. Bags come in child-sizes and in bright, primary colors.

Totes
Totes are casual, all-purpose bags that are easy to carry. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and are great for last minute, "catch-all" items.

Tips for buying the best luggage

The first thing you have to do when shopping for luggage is to keep an open mind because luggage and the way people travel has changed dramatically in recent years. Think of luggage as something that should be able to comfortably hold your belongings and make your travel more enjoyable by taking the weight strain off of your back and shoulders.

You may not realize it but what you're really purchasing is a travel system with various features. Many brands offer inter-connective bags for different needs.

Consider the following features before you buy luggage:

Handles- For vertical luggage, a locking handle system is important because it prevents the handle from damage if you decide to check it.

Wheels- Recessed wheels are preferred because they are less susceptible to damage. I favor larger, rubberized wheels with ball bearings for smooth handling and longevity. Wheel the case on both carpeted and un-carpeted surfaces to check the glide as well as the case's compatibility with your hand and height. Turn corners to check it's balance.

Outer shell- Hard sided cases protect contents but are heavy and clunky. Softsided cases are great carry-ons but don't check them if you're carrying fragile objects. Semisoft sided cases combine the benefits of hard and soft styles.

Material- For soft and semisoft cases nylon is the strongest followed by polyester (often combined) Material is measured in denier - the higher the denier, the thicker the fiber. Look for tight dense weave.

Hardware- Handles and shoulder straps should be attached with multiple rivets for strength. Handles and shoulder straps which are attached with rings should have solid metal rings- split rings can separate.

Zippers- Modern, synthetic zippers made of coils can self-repair when the slide is run back over the zipper, Metal zippers with teeth are tricky to repair.

Luggage is a long term investment. Brand name luggage that has a strong warranty will be more serviceable over the long haul because replacement parts should be readily available. top of page

Packing Your Luggage

· Use a divider shelf to separate accessories, irregularly shaped items, and shoes from your garments. You may also want to stuff your shoes with underwear or socks so they won't be crushed during your travels.

· Suits, dresses, shirts, and blouses should be packed in plastic dry cleaner bags to limit wrinkling.

· Roll pajamas, nightgowns, sweaters, and other casual wear to fill small spaces when possible, BUT don't cram your suitcase full. You never want to have to force your luggage to close.

· Try the "interweaving method" of packing for your next trip. Drape longer garments such as dresses and pants around the suitcase with the ends hanging over the sides. Then fold shorter items such as jackets, shirts and blouses around the longer garments so that the clothes cushion each other. Placing a piece of tissue paper between each layer of clothing will help prevent wrinkling.

· Pack each item one at a time in a clockwise direction. When you have filled the bottom of the suitcase, begin the next layer packing each item in a counter clockwise direction. In this way, you will form one complete package of your clothes, eliminating wrinkles and securing all of your contents.

· Always carry your travel documents, medication, jewelry, traveler's checks, keys and other valuables in your hand luggage. These items should NEVER be packed in luggage you plan to check. top of page
